What is KidneyX?

KidneyX, also called the Kidney Innovation Accelerator, is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). The HHS divisions participating in KidneyX include the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Established in April 2018, KidneyX aims to use prize competitions to accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can prevent, diagnose, and/or treat kidney diseases. KidneyX aims to promote collaboration between patients, health professionals, innovators, industry, and government with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life for people living with kidney diseases.

KidneyX will:

  1. Fund promising innovators through a series of prize competitions;
  2. Encourage better coordination across the HHS agencies, including CMS, FDA, and NIH, to clarify the path toward commercialization and patient access to innovative products; and
  3. Create a sense of urgency to develop new ways to prevent, diagnose, or treat kidney diseases.

What is a prize competition?

A prize competition is a method of problem-solving that describes a problem (usually to the general public) and offers a prize or prizes to whoever comes up with the best solution(s). Prize competitions are a good way to attract ideas and skills from a wide range of fields. Prize competitions only provide funding for solutions that meet the judging criteria established when the competition is announced.

How will KidneyX prize competitions work?

In its prize competitions, KidneyX will identify and describe a problem related to kidney disease that needs to be addressed (for example, finding a new class of kidney replacement therapeutic options for patients, empowering patients or designing better diagnostic tools). Each KidneyX prize competition announcement will outline that prize's eligibility rules, describe the submission process and prize, and explain the criteria for selecting winners. After the submission period ends, a panel of judges will select the winners from the submissions received.

Does KidneyX provide grants?

KidneyX does not provide grants. Instead, KidneyX will operate a series of prize competitions (see What is a prize competition?).

How much funding will be available for prize competition winners?

Different KidneyX prize competitions will have different prize values. Please review the specific prize annoucnement for information on funding for that prize.

How can I get patient input and feedback on my submission/design?

KidneyX has identified a diverse subset of patients representing various national patient organizations that have agreed to serve as a resource for KidneyX participants. If you are interested in receiving feedback from these patients, please contact one of the KidneyX Partner Patient Organizations with your idea, topic area and question to connect you with the patient that best suits your needs.

Who can apply to participate in KidneyX?

Anyone can apply to participate in KidneyX, either as an individual, team, or organization. Each KidneyX prize competition announcement will include the eligibility rules (if any) for that prize.

KidneyX recognizes that many potential participants may have applicable technologies, concepts, or expertise from domains that have not previously been considered with regards to kidney diseases. One of KidneyX's biggest goals is to bring such technologies and expertise into the kidney space.

What sort of help will KidneyX provide to participants?

KidneyX plans to assist prize winners in a variety of ways. Because new innovators often lack experience in product commercialization, KidneyX plans to help prize winners receive input and feedback from patients, investors, business and manufacturing experts, scientists, engineers, regulators, payers, and others as needed.

How can my organization support KidneyX?
