Honorable Mention Lowering the Incidence of Infectious Complications: Early Detection of Peritonitis in Patients Undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis - A Remote Monitoring Device and Cloud-Based Algorithmic Solution

In 2019 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) established a new initiative called "Advancing American Kidney Health", with a goal of increasing homebased dialysis from 12% in 2019 to 80% in 2025.

To meet this goal, healthcare providers must address the common complications of peritoneal dialysis (PD), including the 50% annual incidence of infection-related hospitalizations.

CloudCath has developed an innovative cloud-based PD monitoring technology which will help achieve the HHS goal of 80% home-based dialysis in 2025.

Clinical Need: PD is the fastest growing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment modality. However, this momentum has inherent limitations without a solution for the patient monitoring and complication detection issues associated with PD. Infection-driven hospitalizations are the largest contributor to PD expense in the U.S. and PD-associated peritonitis is a major driver of modality switching to the inconvenient and expensive hemodialysis (HD).

Solution: The CloudCath device remotely monitors the patient's effluent dialysis fluid and sends alerts via the cloud to healthcare providers as soon as signs of infection are detected, thus assuring early, effective, and economic PD treatment. Early detection of peritonitis can lead to earlier clinical intervention and a better clinical response, prior to the current standard of care. Our solution can reduce morbidity and the associated infection-driven hospitalizations, thus preserving PD as the patient's preferred dialysis modality.

CloudCath can facilitate the shift to home-based dialysis by solving issues of PD monitoring, with streaming data accumulation and alerts to providers at the first sign of infection. This shift will benefit all constituents - patient, provider, payer, family and CMS - leading to improved outcome and quality of life, at reduced costs.
