Closing the Medicare Funding Gap for Prisoners on Dialysis

Inmates on dialysis who are released from prison (re-entry) rarely have Medicare coverage at the time of release, precluding enrollment in private dialysis clinics. A re-entry program initiated 4 months prior to release from prison would reduce costs and improve patient care. Medicare at the time of release for ESRD inmates would improve patient care and offer domestic stability The Nephrology offices at Augusta University supervises inmate dialysis for Georgia and can institute the plan. An inmate re-entry program will give prisoners Medicare coverage at the time of re-enry, improve health, and cut costs.
