Organ Rehabilitation Center to Decrease Discarded Donor Kidneys
In 2018, approximately 3,800 donor kidneys were recovered with the intent for transplant, but unfortunately were deemed unusable. The majority were discarded because they had questionable biopsies or took too long to match to a recipient and 'timed out' after more than 20 hours preserved on ice. These kidneys are discarded primarily because transplant surgeons lost confidence that they'd still work. Using a proprietary blend of hardware, tubing, filters and solutions developed by one of the Company's Founders, SeaStar plans to recondition these discarded kidneys, allowing additional time for surgeons to assess organ function.
